And a Republican voted for it. Rep. Joseph Cao (R-La.).

I felt some of the initial joy last night, despite the Stupak amendment, that the bill got through. But reflecting on it this morning, I still can’t quite believe that women were thrown so completely under the bus (and by Democrats). I have to admit that having the bill pass with the Stupak amendment is better than not having the bill pass—let’s not forget that any woman who needs an abortion also needs access to affordable healthcare and lack of health insurance is an even greater barrier to her health than restrictions against abortion—but it’s still the lesser of two evils and I’m fucking sick of choosing only between evils.

I got a triumphant fundraising email this morning, pretending that I would be nothing but thrilled about last night’s events. Honestly, guys, the—literally—least you can do is acknowledge the complete selling out of one of the issues that got you fucking elected in the first place. Protecting safe access to abortion is one of the reasons I vote for the people I vote for and I know I’m not alone.

Just because something is the lesser of two evils doesn’t mean it’s not evil and as happy as I am that health insurance reform is still on the table, I’m not throwing a party right now and I’m sure as hell not giving any money to the institution who just fucked me over and then asked for a tip.
